FO Friday- Cross beanie

As a break from the big projects I have on the go I cast on a hat as a quick knit. It was a chance to try out some new yarn and a pattern  have had in my favourites for a long time.

Pattern: Käänteinen - Reversible Rib Cap by Pirita Hiltunen
Yarn: John Lewis Heritage Merino blend DK
Needle: 3.5mm circular

I made a few changes to get this hat to work. The original pattern is worked in 4 ply, to convert this to DK I cast on 120 stitches. The pattern will work with any number of stitches that will divide by both four and five.

The four sets of double decreases make a cross shape on the top of the hat.

I would prefer this to be a little longer, but it came out of one 50g ball of yarn with a little leftover. Gauging when to start decreases on brim up hard is always tricky.

The yarn is beautifully soft. My only concern is that I am not sure it will hold up to stretching and might end up sagging. It is very affordable at £2.50 a ball. I would like to use it for a bigger project, but will wait to see how it stands up to use.

For some reason this particular pattern always makes me think of one of my friends. I have no idea why, but it does. I was going to send him the hat, but might make another one in a yarn I know will stand up to wear.

  1. Very nice! I love a quick knit. Gives such a sense of "Yay, I got something done amongst all the UFO"S" Very tempted to cast one a beanie myself but I really must get to those other bigger projects. Sigh.
