FO Friday- Carousel socks

Variegated yarns can be tricky to choose patterns for. Often they end up as a mess of colour which looks a bit like something a unicorn might barf.

This pattern gives a chance to try an unusual construction and produces a great effect from variegated yarns with fairly long colour lengths (about 12 stitches).

Yarn: Knitpicks stroll, handpainted in cartoons. Blue leftovers (Regia and A Little Bit Sheepish)
Needle: 2.5mm
Mods: Worked an afterthought heel rather than the suggested short row heel. Worked 12 rounds of rib rather than the suggested picot bind off.

The pattern is very simple to make, it is really just a stocking stitch strip. Getting the sizing right can be tricky, it took a couple of goes to join it at the right place. Working both socks at the same time would make the sizing easier.

The rib helps hold the top in and the sock up.

Close up to show the construction. The strip of knitting is joined together as you go so they do not need to be sewn up after.

This pattern made great use of a tricky variegated yarn. The lengths of each colour are about enough to knit one row, meaning the socks ended up with vertical rainbow stripes.

  2. I love the way that came out! I actually like it in veriegated more than I liked the original self-striping.
