This year I decided to set myself a challenge. Dyeing, spinning and knitting a sweater. This will be a long term project as the pattern I have in mind is made in 4 ply.
Listening to the Knitmore Girls podcast a few weeks ago they announced a SPAKAL- a spin and knit along to make a sweater. I am not using the suggested pattern as I wanted to do stripes and thinner yarn but having people to chat to about it sounds like a good idea.
I am using 900g of Shetland and silk blend (70-30). I have dyed 400g in shades of blue. I was aiming for something a little darker, but I am pleased with it anyway.
I have started working on this. I was aiming for thin and the fibre is doing its best to cooperate, it is super thin. Three plies will hopefully come out about commercial 4 ply weight.
This is not a good picture. The colour looks nothing like this but it does show how the silk shines. You can see how thin it is too.
This is going to take a long time to spin, an ounce takes a couple of sessions.
Not sure what colour the rest will be yet. Maybe shades of grey.
I love the blue shades, good luck with your project.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently knitting myself a jumper/tunic top with my own handspun that I spun last year, just the natural shade - although it will knit up a little quicker as it is worsted weight rather than 4 ply in your project.
Will enjoy watching your progress x
This is going to be a fun project to watch. I am impressed with your very thin spinning. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a fun project. Are you making up your own pattern or have you got one to follow?
