Hurrah! FO day. I have been in the mood to cast on- my specially bought pile of sock yarn has had to be hidden for safety as I have been eyeing its loveliness. Fortunately tomorrow is cast on day for the E socks so one of the pretty yarns has been wound into a ball ready to go.
s
That means that today is the day for sharing my D socks. I am still getting each pair done in the two weeks before I start the next, but this was a closer call. They took longer than the others, it is a quick pattern but other things got in the way of knitting time.

Pattern: Diagonal Rib socks by Ann Budd
Yarn: Regia 4 ply from a destash
Needles: 2.25 mm dpns
Mods: CO 64sts, 10 rnds of P1K1 rib then kfb last stitch to give the 65sts for the pattern.
s
This is a great pattern, it looks awesome, works up very quickly and once you are established you don't need to refer to the pattern. The pattern is all made with twisted stitches and ribbing, so no cable needles.
s
My pair feel a little snug, this is odd because 65sts on 2.25mm needles should be fine, I think maybe the twisted stitches take a little of the stretch out. If I was repeating this I might use 2.5mm needles. I worked exactly as in the pattern except for adding the rib at the cuff, it gave rather pointy toes but they look OK on.
s
My attempt to find the perfect fit this time involved actually measuring the length of my foot and knitting to the measurements. I used the Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook for instructions. And there was some maths to work out the length of the toe as my gauge was off. I don't know if this was successful as they have yet to be worn.
s
The only problem with this pattern is that it is one size, and repeats are 13sts which is quite a lot to add. A bit of fiddling with the ribbing might be the easiest way to alter the stitch count. This will also affect the instruction before the heel flap which arranges the pattern across the top of the foot.

I almost forgot to give them a subtitle, these are going to be "And Another Thing". I have just started reading the 6th Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book of the same name. It is written by Eoin Colfer and it is hard to believe that it is not a Douglas Adam's original, the tone and style are so similar to the first five books.

Great socks! I can't believe you are keeping to the sock knitting schedule. I'm not that committed...or talented. I didn't realize there were 6 Hitchhiker books either...argh! I need to read more.
ReplyDeleteHappy Fiber Arts Friday!
Congratz for finishing sock D! You are a wonder woman to keep up this pace. The close up looks smashing, nice looking socks!
ReplyDeleteThe socks look great. I appreciate your assessment of the pattern because I've had this queued for a while.
ReplyDeleteThose are pretty socks! I love handknit socks but for some reason I knit them really slowly, so I can totally admire you doing a pair in two weeks.
ReplyDeleteI agree totally with Marushka, as I suffer from the same slow sock syndrome!
ReplyDeletei love that pattern, it has been wanting to be made into a pair of socks for my husband! :) i've found that by altering the needle size, i can usually make the sock fit without messing with the # of stitches. anything with cables or twisted stitches is going to be a little more snug. i too had to measure my foot and it was sooo strange...my feet grow and shrink randomly...or that could be my haphazard measuring skills...:)
ReplyDeleteI'm super impressed that you are on schedule! I like this pair a lot, I hope they fit. Have fun with a new cast on!
