FO Friday- F socks

These have taken me the longest of all my alphabet socks so far, the knitting was very plain and fast, but the embroidery slowed me down.

Needle: 2.5mm dpns
Yarn: Knitpicks Gloss
Mods: Shorter leg, three circles removed from embroidery.
New skills: YOYO heel, twisted rib cuff.

This is a great pattern, it is nice to make a plain vanilla sock sometimes, they work up fast and can be knit without too much concentration. The embroidery turns a plain sock into something pretty.

I also learnt a great new heel type- the YOYO heel which is a short row heel using yarn overs instead of wraps. There are details of it here, although that is in no way connected with the above pattern. It works up really fast without the fiddly wraps but I am not too sure about working around the sock twice, it seems to add fabric where it is not needed across the top of the foot.

I am also enjoying the knitpicks gloss, it is really fat for the length to weight. 100g gets you about 400m, so the same as a typical sock yarn but it is definitely fatter, I worked it on 2.5mm needles rather than my usual 2.25mm and got a nice dense fabric. It is also soft and shiny but I will have to see how it washes and wears.

These are going to be subtitled secret socks. The embroidery which jazzes them up is hidden when you have shoes on, like a little secret only you know about.

  2. It's interesting to hear about the knitpicks gloss. It looks nice but I've never seen it in person. I have been tempted to buy it online but hesitated because I didn't know what it felt like. Now I'm much more inclined to give it a go, so thanks for the information.

  4. The gloss felt a bit disappointing in the skein, but is super soft and squooshy (that's a word right?! :D) once it is knitted

  5. I love the embroidery, wow! I've never thought to knit socks using gloss. I've been wanting to try the yarn, as I've heard great things about it. Was it splitty at all?

  6. So much fun, love the embroidery! I don't think I've heard of a yoyo heel, either.

  7. My go to sock pattern is a toe-up 2X2 ribbing. Not much thinking either. But I love how this embroidery looks on these. Thanks for sharing!

  11. As far as knit socks go, I've never been a huge fan, but the simple sock with the embroidery on top is something else. And to have it be a secret is an intriguing idea!
