FO Friday- Mistake rib hat

This is the last of my Christmas present FOs, a hat for my brother in law. I need to get knitting to have something for next week!

Pattern: Mistake Rib Beanie by Anne Macri

Yarn: DK superwash merino, immersion dyed with a blue and black mix.

Needles: 3.5mm

A good pattern, makes a nice unisex beanie type hat. A very simple pattern, I did need to resize it for DK yarn, which I made a mess of the first time and ended up with a HUGE hat!

I mastered the longtail cast on for this one as the green hat for my brother flared oddly at the bottom edge, this is much better. It has become my new Favouite Thing Ever (the capitals are important).

The first set of decreases is good, the second part looks like normal ribbing, which gives the very top a slightly odd appearance, but I can't think of a better way to do them.

  1. I just learned how to knit over New Years's my first project was a hat. I used a German Twist Long Tail to cast on... Gave a great edge.

  3. Beautifully dyed! It's gorgeous. I am about to cast on my first ever knitted hat, and I must say, I'm a little nervous, yet excited! I hope mine turns out half as good as yours!

  4. ah, gauge, it gets us every time. I always love a good ribbed beanie hat. I do tend to knit them in worsted weight though because I hate knitting on such tiny needles, especially for ribbing. Yours turned out great.

    Happy Fiber Arts Friday!

  6. I always use the long tail cast on unless the pattern says specifically otherwise.

Honestly, I'm not sure if I could cast on otherwise without a little youtube help. lol.

  7. Lovely color-- and I'm also a fan of the long-tail cast on, though my tail is always either too long or too short!

  8. I do have my difficulties with the long tail cast on from time to time. No matter how many pair of socks I've made it's still a challenge getting the length of that tail right. Love the shade of blue, very nice hat. Happy Fiber Arts Friday!

  9. For ribbing, I like to use either a tubular cast on, or alternate between regualar (makes a knit st) long-tail and purl long-tail cast on. The purl long-tail CO makes a purl stitch! So, from the CO, you can establish ribbing. I found the Purl long-tail on PieKnits, check it out sometime.
