One way to help prevent carding your hands, and keeping the carders in better shape, is to lay out your fiber initially so the ends of the locks are coming off the end of the carder. Then, work through the ends with the empty carder to transfer the fibers. When the ends are hanging off, it's also easier to roll the fiber off right into a nice sausage.
